Stoke Woods

Escape the hustle and bustle of Exeter city with a visit to Stoke Woods. Located north of Exeter, this is a great place to get in touch with nature.

Stoke Woods has large areas of ancient woodland, making it a very special wildlife haven at the edge of the city. Stretch your legs (and paws) on our wild trails and visit some of the oldest and largest trees in Exeter. Stoke Woods offers a real sense of seclusion despite being only 2 miles from Exeter city centre. Enjoy stunning views of the River Exe and a labyrinth of paths exploring this renowned ancient woodland.

The site is a sanctuary for many species and is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) making it a haven for wildlife. We work in partnership with several organisations to ensure the mammal and bird life and their special habitats are maintained and improved.

There are several paths within the woods, and the flattest routes are from the lower car park along forest roads. It does get wet in the winter, so wear appropriate shoes. Various grades over the site, and the forest tracks are not suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

  • Parking areas are located off Pennsylvania Road and Stoke Road.
  • There are no dog poo bins, please take your waste home with you.
  • Nearest toilets are the service station on stoke road towards Exeter.
  • There are no livestock on site, but as it is a SSSI, please make sure your dog is close by during the busier breeding months of March to July.
